Canon Patent Application: APS-C Zoom lens for Powershots

There are two similar Canon patent applications for this APS-C Zoom lens.  I'm going to suggest that this is for a powershot versus an EOS-M because the image height at the wide end is too small for a non-manipulated RAW output.  This is more indicative of the powershots than it is of an ILC camera.  When the image height is too small, the camera inside stretches the image to fit the entire image area.  Right now this does happen on the G7X series camera bodies.  No EOS-M lens has this "cooking" happening to the raw files.

However, it's possible for Canon to do this in an ILC as well, especially if it's to provide a small compact kit lens with an excellent focal zoom range, it would just be an unusual lens for an ILC.  A 12-50mm kit lens would be a pretty nice kit lens (19-80mm equivalent).  This would make an excellent powershot lens regardless, even though some may not like the 2.4 - 5.6 aperture.
