While we don't know exactly what patent applications Canon will use, usually it's a combination of them. For example, I can't count how many patent applications we've seen for the RF 24-105 lens design. This patent application also has another lens, a 28-85 2.0-2.8 lens, which would certainly be a novel lens if it was ever produced.
