Canon Patent Application: Eye Controlled Focus Patent Applications

This is an interesting set of patent applications uncovered by Keith at Northlight Images.

This first patent application discusses how the camera will perform calibration.  Essentially from reading the patent application, it's similar to how you calibrated it back in the "film days" with the EOS-3, Elan, and other Canon film cameras that had eye controlled AF at the time, where you have your eye follow the moving target and the camera records your iris position. Repeating this for various other locations on the screen completes the calibration.

The second patent application deals with how eye controlled AF will be set up on the camera.  I find this the most curious as it shows a method at least on how Canon is at least thinking about the implementation in more modern cameras with eye and face tracking auto focus systems.

Of course, these are patent applications, and the final implementation may be entirely different on the EOS-R3, however, these patents give us insight into how Canon is thinking about implementing eye-controlled focus in the R3.
