New roadmap for Canon RF Lenses leaked

Nokishita usually gets this right.

The RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM was already announced so we knew that was coming as well as the teleconverters.

The first three lenses look normal and certainly some great lenses that most will appreciate coming.

  • RF50mm F1.8 STM
  • RF85mm F2 Macro IS STM
  • RF70-200mm F4 L IS USM

Now for the weird lenses.  We actually got wind of this before, but honestly refused to believe it was real.

  • RF600mm F11 IS. It seems to be STM
  • RF800mm F11 IS STM

Yes you are reading that right F/11.  I imagine these lenses are super small. The front elements are kept at a reasonable 55mm and 72mm. Combine that with DO and you have some insanely small telephotos.  The problem of course, is the speed of the lenses.  So you can assume this is fair light only use.  You also need to use DLO with these lenses to remove the effects of diffraction from F/11 super tele's.  However, since DLO is built into every R camera, JPEG shooters should have no problems.

Is it really that bad? Well a 600mm F4.0 will set you back $13,000 or so, and they are huge.  This allows three stops less light.  This can be very problematic when you need to use a high shutter speed, and you are already maxing out your ISO.  But these aren't $13K (I hope) and aren't that big (I hope again).   Obvious trade-offs, but is there really a market for this?

What would this be in m43's equivalence? a 300mm F5.6 and 400mm F5.6 - I guess when you drop it down that way, it doesn't sound so bad lol.

Since these are also STM lenses - these aren't L's .. so these are very consumer long telephotos.

Personally I still have a hard time wrapping my head around these telephotos.
