Canon patent for an ND filter adapter for Mirrorless Cameras

This patent basically explains a new adapter for mirrorless that would sit in between the camera and the lenses.

This adapter would have the ability to silently change the ND filter value to eliminate aperture opening / closing noise during video recording.

It would also allow for the use of very fast lenses with a dynamic method of controlling the amount of light received by the camera without stopping down the lens.

This patent application has been doing the rounds, and we feel this could use a better explanation.

When aperture is used to control the amount of light while shooting video the mechanical aspect of aperture blades transmits noise to the recording camera.  A way around this is to create a silent aperture using a electronically variable ND filter.  It uses a combination of mechanical aperture and electronic ND filter to control the amount of light while recording video in the ND silent mode, or normal lens operation if the ND silent mode switch is turned off.
