Canon Announces the Canon RF 20-50mm F4 L IS USM PZ

Canon has just announced the Canon RF 20-50mm F4 L IS USM PZ.  This is a rather unique lens that no one has really done before.  Canon has previously experimented with short focal multiplier zoom lenses on the RF mount prior, with the Canon RF 24-50mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM.  However, this lens, outside of the focal length, bears hardly any resemblance to this lens.

There was a rumor a while back about a Canon RF 20-70mm F2.8L lens, and I'm sure the Canon Clickbait rumor site that came up with that gem will think this was a win for their guesses because it starts at 20mm.  However, as I mentioned before, it's highly unlikely Canon makes an excellent optical lens with a greater than 3x focal zoom multiplier.  This 20-50mm hits the sweet spot of 2.5x zoom multiplier, so I had high hopes in terms of its optical performance, as I'll get into further when we talk about the lens MTF and design.

Lens Design and MTF

The optical design of this lens is pretty simplistic, with 13 elements across 11 groups. There are 3 UD elements and 2 aspherical elements.    The lens also employs Air Sphere Coatings to minimize ghosting and flare.

The MTF is rather ordinary and not exactly what I had expected from an RF L lens at this time. Perhaps I was spoiled by the brilliance of Canon's RF VCM primes.  The lens at 20mm shows a strong loss of resolution in the corners while wide open.  The contrast is good across the frame at 20mm. At 50mm, the resolution is rather low across the frame and tails off into the corners.

The bokeh should be much better at 50mm than it is at 20mm.  At 50mm, when you most likely care about bokeh performance, it appears as if this lens will do well.

That all being said, when you consider that this is a zoom, and it's a relatively small and light package, some compromises had to be made to get a lens down to 20mm on the wide angle.  Something that hasn't been done in a constant aperture zoom.
