Canon Patent Application: Canon RF 28-70 2.2 - 2.8

A continued flurry of patents these last months on RF lenses, and this is another exotic one.

This patent application is for a 28-70, 2.2 - 2.8 full frame lens.  This isn't the amazing 28-70 2.0 lens, but another variant, perhaps "lighter" .. it's certainly smaller, only having a relative lens length of around 155mm.

For those that may be wondering why we are finding so many RF lens patents, it makes sense, Canon had 20 years of EF lens patents to draw from when they create an EF lens, and they are constantly improving on those lens designs, the RF system is starting from scratch, and Canon would want to quickly patent up their unique ideas for RF mount lenses.

The lens embodiments are shown below;

Focal distance      28.84  44.14  67.90
F number             2.25   2.62   2.91
a half field angle  36.88  26.11  17.67
Image height        21.64  21.64  21.64

How to view Japan Patent applications.

Unfortunately, there's no direct way of linking to the patent application (sad!) however, this is the easiest process to view a japan patent or application.

  1. Go to the Japan Patent Office search page.
  2. If it's a patent application (they are usually in the format of Year-Number ie: 2017-011300) then type the patent application number into the second field down from the top where it says publication of patent application.
  3. Click on search.
  4. Then click on the patent application number link, and there's the patent application!
