Canon Patent Applications: Some IBIS Related Patents Canon has published a slew of patent applications this week and in it, we found some intriguing IBIS related patent applications. We're going to briefly summarize each one here. 2020-086435 Another patent dealing with the number of calculations necessary to stabilize the image using both OIS (optical IS) and IBIS (In body) stabilization systems running together. Canon is concerned that this will affect continuous shooting speed, as everything needs to stabilize before you take the image. 2020-086190 Did you know that IBIS has an influence on the shutter mechanism? Yes, that's right - I didn't of it either. As the sensor moves and rotates with pitch / yaw stabilization, the rear curtain slit may be at a different angle then what is optimum with respect to the sensor current stabilization angle. The more I read on Canon's IBIS - the more impressed I am with what they considered for a 1.0 release. 2020-088850 This is another patent application describing the issue that when the sensor shifts, so does the peripheral illumination pattern. This can cause problems for correction, as it's "unbalanced" depending on the direction of the sensor-shift. Also when the sensor is shifted resolution loss can be apparent in a corner depending on the size and "quality" of the image circle. This deals with limiting the amount of sensor-shift to an amount that will grant acceptable image quality on a lens by lens basis.
