The R10 and R7 have leaked - real photos and specifications

We have more detailed information on the R7 and R10 now ahead of the official announcement later today.

In summary;

  1. they are certainly smaller cameras than the full-frame R5 and R6
  2. the 18-45mm lens is actually a thing
  3. I'm not sure who designed the R7 - did they work at Canon before this project?

Overall specifications of the R7 appear to be;

  • 32.5 megapixel APS-C sensor- In body 5-axis image stabilization
  • 2.36 million dot EVF
  • 1.62 million dot vari-angle LCD
  • 15 FPS mechanical 30 fps (12 bit RAW) electronic
  • AF down to -5EV, Animal and person eye AF. Vehicle AF
  • Max Shutter Speed 1/8000
  • DIGIC X
  • 4K60p video, full HD 120p video
  • LP-E6NH battery
  • Dual SD card slot
  • Size: 132.0 x 90.4 x 91.7mm
  • Weight 612g (including battery and memory card)
  • 1500 Euros
  • "some" weathersealing - not as much as the R5 / R6
  • Small buffer (approx 30-40 images RAW, approx 50 images CRAW, approx 70 images JPEG)
  • No top plate LCD
  • Canon Log 3, 10bit 4-2-2, timecode, no 30min limit

There were other specifications mentioned in a video that was since taken down;

  • 1/320 flash sync
  • focus bracketing
  • 4K/60 uncropped
  • 4K/30 oversampled from 7K
  • Full-HD/120

The specifications of the R10 appear as;

  • 24.2 megapixel APS-C sensor
  • 12 fps mechanical, 23 fps electronic (12 bit RAW)
  • 1/4000 Max shutter speed
  • 2.36 million dot EVF
  • AF to -4EV, Animal and person eye AF.  Vehicle AF
  • 1.04 million dot LCD
  • DIGIC X
  • 4K60p video (cropped), 4K30 uncropped oversampled from 6K, full HD 120p video, no 30 minute limit
  • No CLOG
  • LP-E17 battery
  • single SD card slot
  • Size: 122.5 x 87.8 x 83.4mm
  • Weight: 429g (including battery and memory card)
  • 1200 Euros

The prices are in euros, which should make the R7 around $1300-1400 USD and the R10 around $1000.

Canon seems to have gone out to the left-field when it comes to the camera design, especially for the R7.  The R7 certainly doesn't give the feeling that it's the RF version of the 7D.  Instead, it reminds me more of the 90D. Sort of.  The buffer depth specifications that were gleaned from the video below I find to be disappointing for a 7 series camera.  Maybe faster UHS-II cards will increase that substantially.  The reviewer never mentioned what cards she was using.

It's going to be a confusing hot mess for muscle memory if you have both full-frame and APS-C on the RF mount, or even an R7 and a backup R10.  Then again, Sony has shown us that perhaps it is not important.  However, it's a glaring deviation from what was one of Canon's strong points.

No mention about any sort of "new" sensors being in these cameras - so I suspect we are seeing the last generations of the 32 and 24MP sensors that were used in the EOS-M lineup and also the 90D.

In short, the R10 is trying to be the RF's version of the M50, and the R7 is somewhat around what the M5 Mark II should have been. Coming from the EOS-M, this is really a wait-and-see to what other lenses come out and if Canon makes any further commitments to RF-S.   If you are coming from EF-S, then this may be the camera system for you, while using an adapter with your current EF-S lenses.  I personally would give the 18-45mm lens a hard pass, and the 18-150 sporting a near .5x macro seems like a good lens to have in your bag for general travel, etc photography.

Review videos have leaked ahead of schedule (I took as much of the new specifications as possible from these videos)

The RF-S 18-45mm STM lens specifications are;

  • configuration: 7 elements in 7 groups-
  • Shortest shooting distance: 0.20m (AF), 0.15m (MF) --Maximum
  • shooting magnification: 0.16x (AF), 0.26x ( MF) --Filter
  • diameter: 49mm
  • Size: 69.0 x 44.3mm --
  • Weight 130g

The RF-S 18-150mm STM lens specifications are interesting as it has a very high magnification;

  • configuration: 17 elements in 13 groups
  • Minimum shooting distance: 0.17m (AF), 0.12m (MF)
  • Maximum shooting magnification: 0.44x (AF), 0.59x ( MF)
  • Filter diameter: 55mm
  • Size: 69.0 x 84.5mm
  • Weight 310g

How to view Japan Patent applications.

Unfortunately, there's no direct way of linking to the patent application (sad!) however, this is the easiest process to view a japan patent or application.

  1. Go to the Japan Patent Office search page.
  2. If it's a patent application (they are usually in the format of Year-Number ie: 2017-011300) then type the patent application number into the second field down from the top where it says publication of patent application. 
  3. Click on search.
  4. Then click on the patent application number link, and there's the patent application!
