Canon in Space: Technology Demonstration of Canon satellite continues

Canon Electronics Inc and the new division formed in 2012, Satellite Systems Laboratory continue to work with small satellites using right now a 5D Mark III and a PowerShot S110. The satellite was launched in June 23 last year, and they are beginning to work on the second test satellite, the CE-Sat-1B.  The eventual plan is to have 100 satellites in orbit, and the ability for sub-meter earth resolution and 8K video streaming using laser communication.

Canon was discussing this satellite and their future plans at the small satellite conference this week held at Utah State University.

“Earth observation was selected as a mission since imaging is the DNA of Canon,” CEI’s Nobutada Sako told the Small Satellite conference here Aug. 9. “This time, we aimed to take images of the Earth.”

Equipped with a Canon DSLR EOS 5D Mark III and a 16 mm Canon PowerShot S110, the 65-kg CE-SAT-1 was launched June 23 last year atop an Indian PSLV rocket carrying the CartoSat-2D spacecraft and 30 piggyback satellites.
