Canon applies for a 85mm 1.8 and 100 1.8 patent.

We discovered this optical lens patent detailing optical forumulae for the following lens embodiments;

  • 85 1.8
  • 50 1.8
  • 85 1.4
  • 100 1.8

While obviously the 85mm 1.4 is not taken from this patent application (there's no IS), the 85 and 100mm lens are certainly lenses which are way overdue for an upgrade being around 26 years old.

Of curiousity would be the 100mm 1.8 a faster variant than the 100 2.0 that exists today.

85mm 1.8

Focal distance 83.00
F number 1.85
Field angle 14.61
Image height 21.64
Whole length of the lens 115.00
BF 42.76

100mm 1.8

Focal distance 97.00
F number 1.85
Field angle 12.57
Image height 21.64
Whole length of the lens 135.00
BF 39.00

These are of course patent applications, Canon may never use them - however a 100 1.8 would go nicely in my camera bag :)
