image pickup optical system used in an image pickup apparatus (camera), there is a demand for a zoom lens having a short overall length, a compact overall system, and high optical performance over the entire zoom range. Also, if the angle of incidence of the off-axis light beam on the image pickup element is large, shading (color shading) and lack of peripheral light amount occur, so that it is required to be a zoom lens having good telecentricity on the image side.
