Canon Patent Application: Canon RF 85mm F1.4L

Canon's 85mm F1.4 was an instant hit, striking a sweet spot between the Canon EF 85mm F1.2 and the consumer Canon EF 85mm F1.8.

In this patent application, it appears as if Canon may be considering that level of thinking for the RF mount, as we see here in this design, is a complicated 85mm F1.4 design.  Since this optical design is quite a lot more complicated than the Canon RF 85mm F2.0 I feel confident in suggesting that Canon would be looking at this as an L grade optic.

I for one would love a series of F1.4 primes that sit in between the dazzling F1.2's and the consumer STM lenses.

In one of the designs the back focus distance seems quite small for an RF mount lens, but there are certainly some embodiments that fit the specifications of the RF mount.  With any patent application, it's not a guarantee it will end up in an actual product, but more insight into what Canon is researching
