Fake Rumor: Canon R5 price on dealer site

A new rumor is sending panic through the Internet as an Australian dealer creates waves through the rumor sites.  They have since changed their website page to show a "holding deposit" of $200 AUD and not an advertised price of $10499 AUD ($6700 and change USD).  They have no more details, specifications, or even images of the R5 - this was simply a way to attract attention.  Which is, of course, is exactly what happened.

They now state after changing the price to $200 AUD

"THIS IS A HOLDING DEPOSIT THAT'S FULLY REFUNDABLE. IT'S NOT THE FULL PRICE. WE'LL CONTACT YOU ONCE WE HAVE FIRM PRICING"

Which means the $10499 AUD circulating was simply fictitious.

With the way the economies are going globally, I'm not even sure Canon knows what the subsidiaries are going to price the R5 out at yet.  It's even more unlikely that a dealer would have the price at this time.

One thing pretty much for certain. It's highly unlikely that it will cost more expensive than the 1DX Mark III, while it has some impressive features, it doesn't have near the build quality or engineering of a 1 series camera body.  With the 5 series moniker, there's a strong likelihood that it will be priced similarly to the 5D series as it has been since the original 5D.

We're hoping that with the prior scheduled timeline of Photokina before COVID-19 that Canon continues to provide more clarity on the R5 so stuff like this doesn't end up becoming internet fact.
