New Rumor: Canon 7D series - RIP

A new rumor has confirmed that the 7D series seems to have been discontinued by Canon.  There will not be a 7D Mark III.

The rumor then goes on to speculate that the replacement could be either a 90D or maybe an APS-C RF camera.

I'm personally not sure what to make of this rumor, as we've discussed here, it's quite difficult to make a 90D replace the 7D Mark III in terms of full ergonomics, and at the same time keep what makes the 90D, a 90D instead of simply a 7D Mark III in all but name.

What does the 7D series bring to the table?  Defined ergonomics the same as the 5D series, enhanced weather sealing, build quality, large bright viewfinder and performance closer to the 1 series than any other camera that Canon creates.

While a lot of that may move to the 90D, the bulk of what makes a 7D special could not because it would dramatically increase the size and weight of the camera.

What about an APS-C RF mount camera?  This seems a little like wishful thinking to me.  I at least right now can't see Canon putting out an RF APS-C camera and essentially crippling the future of the EOS-M which is Canon's only successful mirrorless camera line right now and is the only thing in Canon's lineup that has performed well over the last 2 years.  We discussed this in greater detail, in the EOS M Quandary.

Whatever the case may be, as we talked about here, the 7D makes it a mess for Canon to resolve, and it just may be the easiest way is to simply ignore the problem and let it go away.
