Nikkei Asian Review: Canon, king in SLR cameras, makes inroads into mirrorless Nikkei Asian Review posted an article on Canon and the release of the M50. This is an interesting article that discusses the EOS-M50 and what Canon considers it to be a strategic model in it's mirrorless lineup; Canon said Monday that it will release an entry-level mirrorless camera next month. The product is positioned as "a strategic model" for mirrorless cameras, according to Masahiro Sakata, president of Canon group member Canon Marketing Japan. Canon hopes that the new product will attract demand from families, including mothers who enjoy taking pictures of their children. Canon also seems to have changed it's position about how mirrorless and DSLR's will coexist, stating; With mirrorless cameras rapidly gaining popularity and rivals like Sony breaking into SLRs, Canon decided it must "actively roll out products for a growth market even if there is some cannibalization," Sakata said. This is of course, good news for us that want better mirrorless cameras and an ecosystem from Canon. Canon needs to update the M6 and the M5 cameras fairly quickly to include the newer features of the M50 and also to augment video moreso than what the M50 provides. It will be interesting, given the heightened interest within Canon concerning mirrorless, on how they proceed. Sony is a tough competitor, however, for the most part, they have not kept up as much with the APS-C market as they are focusing most of their innovation into the full frame A7 and 9 series camera bodies. Fuji however is pulling out all the stops in thier mirrorless APS-C lineup. Canon has to take these camera manufacturers seriously and starting competing on features, and not only on their name.
