LensVid: Interview with Canon

16-35mm,24-70mm and 70-200mm 2.8L coming in 2019

LensVid sat down with Canon and talked about the EOS R.  They asked a variety of technical questions about the EOS R and also other cameras.  It's a good video to watch, but the sound is a bit hard to understand.

Some interesting points were made in the interview;

  1. Canon is going to focus on RF mount lenses in the coming future.  They realize they need to catch up with mirrorless lenses.   EF mount lenses are coming.
  2. The 2.8 holy trinity (16-35,24-70,70-200) is coming.  Soon.  In 2019.
  3. The market for this camera was the photo enthusiast, not the professional users.  Think around the 6D Mark II users.
  4. The sensor in the EOS R was inherited from the 5D Mark IV sensor, however microlenses and changes for DPAF down to -6EV
  5. Canon claims the shorter the flange back the less reliable the camera.  They choose 20mm because they can make the mount on the camera more rigid with longer screws holding the mount to the camera.
  6. EOS-M is not feasible to adapt, they suggest that only macro lenses from the EOS-RF could be made to fit the EOS-M (Editor: because they would increase the registration distance of the RF lens from 20mm to be able to fit mechanically on an EF-M camera body and not have infinity focus, just short distance focus)
  7. 4K and video was not a high priority for the camera.
  8. Canon's processors aren't there yet for 10 bit 4:2:2 video, and is the reason behind the 3 fps / 5 fps continuous focus rate.
