A look at the Canon RF Drop in Filter filter adapter

When the EOS R was announced last September, it contained two revolutionary Canon RF mount to EF lens adapters.  The drop in filter adapter and the control ring adapter.

This video from Potato Jet, shows off the new drop in filter adapter with the variable neutral density filter drop in.  The variable neutral density drop in filter is controlled with a small wheel on the side of the filter and can block from 1.5 to 9 stops of light.  Canon also manufacturers a circular polarizer filter for the drop in filter adapter that works the same way, with a small wheel on the side of the filter to control the circular polarizer.

What happens if you just want to remove the filter you have and keep the adapter on? Well, Canon sells an add on called the clear filter adapter which allows you to swap out your variable neutral density filter or your circular polarizer filter and replace it with a clear filter.  You can also purchase the variable density or the neutral density drop in filter separately so that you can use them with your adapter.  If you are purchasing multiple filters, it's most likely best to purchase the adapter with the variable neutral density filter because it's the same price as the filter standalone.

One missing element that Canon has not given any indication on, is the possibility for a drop in screw on filter adapter to slide into the slot of the adapter.  This would greatly increase the utility of the filter adapter.
