Canon discontinuing EF lenses at a rapid pace

According to CanonRumors, Canon is actively moving away from the EF mount at what is a record pace.  I would have normally expected lenses to be still manufactured by Canon for at least 5+ years after the RF mount was released in 2018.

We verified the CanonRumors list against Canon USA's website and discovered some new potential lenses. But first, Canon USA  has two categories for lenses that they currently do not have stock for;  "out of stock" and "on backorder". The main difference between out of stock and on backorder is that you cannot place an order at all for an out of stock lens, while if the lens is marked on backorder you can place an order and wait for stock to appear.  Out of stock seems to be Canon USA's way of discontinuing the lens.  This aligns almost perfectly with CanonRumor's list as well.

While these first two are consumer lenses, Canon certainly doesn't have any replacement for these lenses in the RF mount currently.  It should be noted that the 40mm F2.8 simply is appearing as "on backorder" from Canon USA, and that you can still place an order for this lens.

  • Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM
  • Canon EF 60mm F2.8 Macro USM

Surprisingly, Canon has also seemingly discontinued L lenses, something that shocks me as I would have expected these to be the last to be discontinued.

  • Canon EF 85mm F1.2L II USM
  • Canon EF 200mm F2.0L IS USM
  • Canon EF 70-200mm F4.0L IS II USM

Also while we were verifying these lenses, we found some others that may be discontinued as well.

These lenses are all marked as out of stock and quite possibly no longer available.

  • Canon EF 70-200 F2.8L USM
  • Canon EF 85mm F1.8 USM
  • Canon EF 800mm F5.6L IS USM
  • Canon EF 300mm F4L IS USM
  • Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Also curiously the extender EF 2x III is marked out of stock but the Extender EF 1.4x III is marked in stock.  Could Canon USA be selling off what is rest of their inventory on the extender 1.4x and that's it?

Of course, you can still find these lenses at other vendors, however, after those supplies run out, that may be it.
