Canon patent for new style of articulating display Adding a fully articulating screen to the 5D, 7D or the 1 series camera bodies would change the ergonomics significantly as the left side buttons would have to move and be reorganized somewhere else on the back of the camera. In most cases, this would be next to impossible without seriously degrading the ergonomic performance of the camera body. This patent application, discovered by Canon Rumors, suggest one way of doing it, however, to be honest, this looks awkward and unwieldy as some haptic controls are only available with the panel turned up. it also would affect the balance of the camera, and operation quite a bit. About the only place we could see this patent implemented was on a specific DSLR or Mirrorless EF mount camera that is specifically tweaked for video. In this case, you would tend to use the LCD monitor up more often than down against the camera body, as the camera would then mimic more traditional video ergonomics. Canon has the habit of applying for patents for just about everything, so even this, looks to get a patent. I wouldn't expect this patent on a Canon Camera any time soon, partly because it's only a Japan application, and secondly it just doesn't look like any final polished solution that would end up on one of Canon's high end professional cameras.
