One of the notations on the Canon USA press release gave away another piece of information that people have been waiting for - which is .. what is the resolution of the sensor. Canon USA specified that it will shoot 8K DCI which is 8192 x 4320. This means to fit the DCI full width on the sensor, the sensor width must be 8192 pixels wide, and because full-frame sensors are a 3:2 screen size, that means the height is 5461 pixels. This translates to a sensor resolution of 44.7MP. It's almost a certainty that it is a 44.7MP sensor that we're going to be seeing on this camera. One could argue that the statement meant 4K DCI and not 8K and 4K DCI, however any type of line-skipping, or binning, or sampling from 8K down to 4K DCI (4096 x 2160) would most often require an 8K DCI as the sensor starting point. Simply being it's easier to take 8192 columns and down 4096 and it's another thing to take 7860 columns down to the 4096 required for 4k DCI. Before someone says they will only offer quasi-4K then and upsample to 4096x2160 DCI - there's no sense in that, they could have just stated it was 4K UHD and been done with it.
