ePhotoZine hands on with the Canon RF 70-200 2.8L IS USM

ePhotoZine got their hands on the Canon RF 70-200 2.8L IS USM at The Photography Show 2019 in Birmingham UK.  There still isn’t much in the way of information on any of the new RF lenses, and this one is no different.  We can, however, see the remarkable size difference in between the Canon EF 70-200 2.8L IS USM, and the Canon RF 70-200 2.8L IS USM.

Canon pre-announced six lenses for the RF mount on February 14th;

  • RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM
  • RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
  • RF 15-35mm f2.8L IS USM
  • RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM
  • RF 85mm f/1.2L USM
  • RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS

There is no word on if the entire barrel extends, however it’s very likely that it does.

The patent was one in which we first discovered here, which shows the minimum length of the lens at around 152mm (you must subtract the camera lens mount to sensor distance from the lens length, which in the case of the Canon RF mount, is 20mm).  The current Canon EF lens is a full 47mm taller than the patent, with a length of 199mm, a significant difference.
