Gordon Laing tests the overheating with firmware 1.1.0

Gordon Laing from CameraLabs tested out firmware 1.1.0 and reported his findings.

Some notes

  1. Canon uses 3 temperature sensors (two internal and one ambient around the port) to determine how long it should be running for.  It now checks more often.
  2. The two temperature sensors are from the AF and also around the sensor.  It makes sense because the sensor temperature is the most critical for image quality.  It's also going to be a much lower threshold than the CPU temperature.
  3. External Ambient temperature sensor is weighed to be more important - probably due to all those fridge tests.

Gordon's findings;

  • Slight increase in 4K120 and 8K recording times
  • the number of 30 second clips (and then turning off) and then another 30 second clip which replicates how Gordon uses the camera increased from 22 cycles to 96 cycles.  A significant change.
  • Gorden did a cooldown test of how long it took to cool off from after full shutdown after 96 cycles. from ambient, it took 32 minutes to fully cool off versus 12 minutes in the freezer.  (certainly not just a timer)
