7D Mark III to get "real" 4K?
At CR, the rumors are circling about more features of the next 7D Mark III.
CR states;
We’re told that the Canon EOS 7D Mark III, which will be Canon’s first APS-C 4K camera, will have a slight crop when shooting in 4K.
As for frame rates, do not expect anything more than 30fps in 4K, and 60fps in 1080P.
There has been no mention of whether or not this camera will get a CFast slot. The EOS-1D X Mark II does, while the EOS 5D Mark IV does not. We’d like to see the EOS 7D Mark III get a CFast slot along with an SD slot.
We don’t yet have a solid announcement timeframe for the 7D Mark III, we hope to solve that riddle soon.
It's probably one of the worst kept secrets that the 7D Mark III will have some sort of 4K. The question is, will it have MJPEG or h.265 or h.264 codec support.
With a video rate of probably 100mb/sec which is the nominal bitrate for consumer 4K, or even the bitrates for MJPEG at 30fps, Canon doesn't need to implement a CFAST card. However, they may implement to have a much deeper buffer for regular still shooting, since that's now all the rage with sporstshooting cameras such as the D500.
One element is that for larger than a 1.6 or 1.7 crop means that hey have taken 6K down to 4K with an MJPEG implementation or implemented a h.264 or h.265 Codec with oversampling or lineskipping.
It's way too early for a DIGIC 8 to show up in a DSLR, as we haven't even had murmurings of it showing up anywhere, and they usually first appear in Powershot cameras. For the 4K to be larger than a 1.6-1.7 crop and with an encoded video stream for h.264, that means the internal video pipeline has to move up from 1080. As of right now, no Canon camera has a 4K pipeline. Not the 5D Mark IV or even the 1DX Mark II.
Some people have put down Canon has deliberately holding back features from the 5D or the 1DX to protect their CINI line, when in fact it appeared that DIGIC simply wouldn't support it. Time will tell for us to see if Canon has resolved it's internal problems with supporting 4K with a nominal codec of h.265 or h.264.
