Canon Patent Application: LCD for image review while using an EVF
This patent is interesting. It discusses how to do image review and also live operation with an EVF based camera and the back LCD panel, but most interesting, is the camera suggested in the patent application. It's a DSLR shaped camera, and not an M designed camera. While Canon could use any looking camera for it's patents, usually the image of the camera, guides their intent. In other words, I would not have expected this to be an DSLR, if they were not looking at EVF's in DSLR form factors, but would have shown an M5 or M6 camera, it's not as if Canon doesn't have those images floating around.
About this patent, it's still a great idea and I'd love to see this on my M's. In an OVF based camera, you can have image review turned on, so that after you choose, the image reviews on the back LCD panel immediately. However, when you are running with a Canon EVF equipped camera, image view shows up in your EVF screen, however, it would be good if the image review can still be redirected to the LCD and not the EVF to hinder continuous shooting.
In other words, this patent is to make an EVF based camera act the same way as existing OVF based DSLR's. Interesting.
A digital single lens reflex camera has a thing provided with the eyepiece finder for the composition check of an object, and the back face display for performing the display of an image, the live view display, and various setting out which were photoed. In recent years, the digital cameras which are mounting the electronic view finder (EVF) on the eyepiece finder are increasing in number. In the camera which mounted EVF, since not only an object but various screens can be displayed in a finder, a setting variation etc. can be done easily, with an eyepiece carried out.
It becomes possible [ the image confirmation after photographing ] to have carried out the eyepiece of the finder.
However, if image confirmation is performed by EVF, an object cannot be immediately checked after photographing but it may become the hindrance to the next photographing. Since EVF is small and it is used to that detailed image confirmation is difficult and an old optical finder (OVF), it can be predicted that image confirmation has many users who carry out on a back face display (LCD). However, since it is also a merit to OVF, I would like to utilize effectively that image confirmation immediately after photographing can be performed in EVF. When the eyepiece is being carried out at the time of photographing, and a live view image is displayed on EVF and it changes into a non-eyepiece state by a Patent document 1, the technique of displaying the last taken image on LCD is disclosed.
