Canon Patent Application: Lens with touch panel

In this patent application Canon is illustrating a interchangable lens that has a touch panel on the side of the lens in which you'd touch and control with your thumb as you hold the lens and camera.

This would be used instead of the focus control ring, to control the focus of the lens.  However, I could see this being expanded to also include the ability to choose AF location, as I think that would be brilliant.

A technique described in Patent Document 1 is known as a technique in which a user-operable touch panel is provided on an interchangeable lens (lens device) that can be attached to a camera body. The interchangeable lens described in Patent Document 1 is provided with one or two rectangular touch panels extending in the circumferential direction, and focusing or the like is performed by the user operating the touch panels.
