Is there a new Canon 70-200 2.8L in the works?

Continuing our patent day here at CanonNews we found a patent application with several embodiments that suggest that Canon is working on a new version of the excellent 70-200 2.8L IS II.

While some may say, it's good enough, it's already 7 years old now.  (Time flies!!)

Since Canon's bread and butter L lenses are usually refreshed before 10 years is up, this may indeed be a precursor to a new version of the 70-200 2.8.  Also Nikon and Sony have both released newer versions of their 70-200 2.8's so it's unlikely Canon will stand still.

Again, this is a published patent application, there is still the hurdle of getting this to an actual published patent.
