January CIPA 2026 - Great Start to the Year

The data obtained from the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) for the month of January 2026 indicates a thriving photography market with a specific strategy of achieving high-value growth. The overall digital still camera global shipment volume for the month of January 2026 was 622,390 units. The volume recorded a healthy increase of 15.6% compared to the previous year. The market is growing on the back of a healthy mirrorless camera segment, coupled with the revival of the built-in lens compact camera segment.

Built-In Lens / Compact Cameras

The most notable aspect of the January 2026 report is the revival of the built-in lens compact camera segment. This segment continues to grow, having a healthy year-over-year increase of 36.1%. The volume of the built-in lens compact camera segment has seen a healthy increase of 36.1%, with 168,847 units shipped. The increase in the value of the built-in lens compact camera segment has seen an even healthier increase of 33.8%, with the value exceeding 10.46 billion yen.

Mirrorless Cameras

The mirrorless camera segment continues to drive the overall camera market, with 418,488 units shipped. The segment recorded an increase of 16.0% compared to the previous year. The mirrorless camera segment is growing at a slower rate, but it is the only growing segment. The DSLR camera segment is declining by 36.3%, with 35,055 units shipped.

China Dominates

From a regional perspective, China is seen to be a leading factor in the current camera market. In China, interchangeable lens cameras saw a shipment volume of 98,657 units. This figure increased by 26.3% year over year. The shipment value also saw a significant increase of 29.3%, reaching more than 12.4 billion yen. This is a significant increase compared to other major markets. This shows that China is a key factor for the growth of high-value products.

Europe and the Americas saw more modest or slowing growth. Europe saw a healthy increase in shipment volume for interchangeable lens cameras, with a 4.5% increase to 100,172 units. The shipment value, however, saw a more significant increase of 11.1%. The Americas saw a slowing down of shipment volume to 96,904 units for interchangeable lens cameras. This figure also saw a decline of 28% year over year.

The January 2026 data from CIPA indicates a market that is successfully moving on to a new path with some worrisome markets such as the Americas.

The explosive growth of the camera market in China, combined with the steady growth of mirrorless cameras around the world, indicates that although the number of camera-wielding citizens is changing, the number of passionate photographers remains steadfast and eager to move towards more expensive, high-quality equipment.
