Canon Silently Releases Firmware Version 2.0.7 for RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens
Canon has silently released a new firmware update for its extremely popular RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens. The new firmware, version 2.0.7, was released on or around January 22-23, 2026. This new update includes significant usability improvements, particularly for those using this lens for video production or a mix of photography and video, without any announcements on Canon’s websites.
Significant Improvements with Firmware Version 2.0.7 for RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens
Electronic Full-Time Manual Focus (FT-MF): Users now have the option to manually override the lens’s autofocus at any time. This feature is available with One-Shot AF and Servo AF. This feature, also known as "full-time manual focus," only works with a compatible EOS R camera body.
Ability to Use Focus Ring as a Customizable Control Ring: The lens’s focus ring now has the option to be used as a customizable control ring, particularly useful for video production. Users can now adjust the lens’s aperture without any noise from the physical control ring. This feature only works with a compatible EOS R camera body.
General Operational Stability: The new firmware includes a few tweaks for improved operational stability, although no specific issues are mentioned.
The new improvements give this lens, launched in 2018, a modern twist, particularly for video production.
Compatible Camera Models
The new improvements are available on certain EOS R camera models, including the EOS R1, R3, R5, R5 II, R6, R6 II, R6 III, R7, R8, R10, etc.
How to Get and Install the Update
The update is available for download on Canon Japan, Canon Australia (for Windows and Mac), and partially available on Canon Europe (for Mac). It is also not available on Canon USA as of late January 2026. This has caused some frustration for users.
The firmware file is the same everywhere (~2.88 MB). So, it does not matter where you download it.
Download From Canon Japan
Before you begin with the update process, it is a good idea to first check your lens version via your camera. If your lens is already on version 2.0.7, there is no need for you to update it.
Thoughts
The surprise update for this professional-grade lens, released seven years ago, has left many in awe. Some speculate that this may mean Canon is not planning an update for its Mark II version. Others welcome it as a great update, especially for those who want silent aperture control for their videos.
The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L is one of the most popular walk-around lenses. This is because it offers sharpness, especially on the wide end, decent IS, and a relatively compact size. Although it has its drawbacks, such as its performance at 105mm.
